• It is also used before words beginning with a vowel sound, even if they are classified as consonants in writing. For instance, «An hour has passed»;
• Furthermore, «an» is used before abbreviations and acronyms that begin with a vowel sound, such as «He’s an FBI agent».

«The» is used:

• before specific or particular nouns, whether they are singular or plural. For instance, «I saw the cat that you mentioned».
• It is also used before nouns that have already been mentioned or are known to both the speaker and the listener. For example, «I bought a car. The car is blue».
• Additionally, «the» is used before unique or superlative nouns like «the sun» or «the tallest building».

Используется  «А»:

3. Landmasses and Bodies of Water: We typically use «the» when referring to specific landmasses or bodies of water. For example, we say «the Amazon River» or «the Sahara Desert».
4. Groups of Islands: When referring to a specific group of islands, we use «the» before the name. For instance, we say «the Maldives» or «the Bahamas»
5. Mountain Ranges and Mountain Peaks: Generally, we use «the» before the names of mountain ranges, such as «the Himalayas» or «the Alps.» However, we do not use «the» before individual mountains, like «Mount Everest».

For example, consider the phrase «He thinks he is a Shakespeare.» Here, «Shakespeare» is used to refer to someone who writes or acts like Shakespeare, not the actual person himself
2. Another exception is when a proper noun is followed by a descriptive phrase. In this situation, the article should be used with the descriptive phrase instead of the proper noun itself. For example, instead of saying «I went to the Lake Superior,» it is recommended to say «I went to Lake Superior»
3.  This usage helps to distinguish between using the proper noun as a specific name and indicating a general location. In certain cases, when the context makes it clear that a common noun is being referred to, an article can be used with a proper noun. For instance, saying «I saw the Mona Lisa» is acceptable because it is evident that the speaker is referring to the famous painting and not an actual person named Mona

Как правило, в английском перед именами собственными не употребляются артикли, но, есть и исключения.

Когда имя собственное используется для обозначения общего существительного, оно принимает артикль. Например, «He thinks he is a Shakespeare» («Shakespeare» здесь относится к тому, кто пишет или действует как Шекспир, а не к реальному человеку) или «He seems to be an Australian..
